Bird Hazard Management

Bird hazard management is one of the most critical factors affecting both the safety and thus the viability of any aerodrome. The reputational damage as well as the financial implications of a single birdstrike can run into millions of pounds, even when the aircraft is only damaged. In 2009 there were 1,823 reported birdstrikes in the UK (Source CAA) and in the US around 8,000 birdstrikes were reported in 2008 (Source FAA). At the start of the millennium bird strikes were estimated to cost the aviation industry US$1.2 billion.

The UK Civil Aviation Authority state on their website “Birdstrikes are a cause of damage to aircraft and have the potential to cause an accident. The risk of a birdstrike can however be minimised through the application of appropriate and effective bird control measures adopted by aerodrome operators, working in conjunction with other organisations and specialists.”

An effective Bird Control Management Plan (BCMP), including the measures necessary to assess the birdstrike risk at the aerodrome and the identification of appropriate action to minimise that risk, should be an integral part of that aerodrome’s safety management culture and its Safety Management System (SMS).”

Airlines and regulators look to the Accountable Manager for answers to some key questions: records, training and resourcing. It is vital that the Accountable Manager has the right answers to those questions.

Added to the regulatory burden is the true cost of bird risk hazard management:

Wages and associated costs for staff on dispersal duties
Training, salary or overtime for staff on that training
Licences for staff
Procurement of weapons and ammunition
Licences for weapons and ammunition
Maintenance of weapons
Procurement of vehicles
Maintenance of vehicles
Fuel for vehicles
IT costs for record keeping and analysis
Management time for collating, analysing and carrying out actions from that data

Stevenson Airside Solutions Ltd. can assist by delivering a class-leading service by experienced, highly trained and motivated operational practitioners. Utilising the latest techniques and supported by the best equipment, our team of highly trained and motivated staff are some of the most experienced in bird hazard management.

Whether it is a bird hazard site assessment, interim support or fully managed on-airport hazard management, please contact Stevenson Airside Solutions Ltd. to be your partner of choice.

Habitat Management

As far as birds are concerned, an airfield is just one more field. You may think that they are scattered around the landscape haphazardly but this is not the case, some types of airfields are more attractive to birds than others. Different species are attracted to different habitats on and around airfields. Stevenson Airside Solutions Ltd. is now able to supply habitat management services airside to support bird hazard risk management, please contact us to discuss.
